LEAD MECHANIC / SHOP FOREMAN

The Shop Foreman. Sugg is searching for a qualified Lead Shop Mechanic to be responsible for supervising and coordinating day-to-day operations of shop duties, including managing staff, overseeing maintenance and repairs, and proper documentation. This individual plays a key role in inventory management, quality control, training, and safety protocols. Ensuring the quality of repairs by performing indepth inspections and road testing are of upmost importance in this position. 

This is a vital role for the company. This individual must have prior experience in a similar past role in order to be eligible to apply. 


Essential Functions

The following are a list of essential functions for the position. These are responsibilities that an individual must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Maintains, repairs, and occasionally operates construction or power equipment, including but not limited to an excavator, grader, bulldozer, backhoe, front end loader, skid steer, asphalt paver, dirt/asphalt roller, asphalt reclaimer, soil stabilizer, and asphalt milling machine.
  2. Maintains, repairs, and occasionally operates other small equipment and tools as required.
  3. Maintains, repairs, and road tests lowboy and dump trucks to stay DOT compliant.
  4. Responsible for diagnosing and troubleshooting equipment failures and either repairing or overseeing third party repairs.
  5. Responsible for maintaining diesel and gasoline engines.
  6. Performs shop management functions such as maintenance scheduling, spare parts inventory control, and maintaining proper shop logs.
  7. Oversees cleaning equipment as needed to aid in diagnostic evaluation and repairs.
  8. Maintains and oversees on-site stock for the routine maintenance and repair of all fleet equipment, trucks and vehicles including but not limited to fuel, grease, oil, fluids, filters, and small wear parts.
  9. Operates small electric and air powered hand tools including but not limited to welders, cut-off saws, drill presses, jacks, chain hoists, overhead cranes, vehicle lifts, grease guns, bench grinders, pressure washers, presses, and torches.
  10. Travels to remote locations or jobsites as needed for the emergency repair and maintenance of fleet equipment, trucks, and vehicles.
  11. Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards as determined by law, site requirements and company policies.
  12. Performs and oversees pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles driven, equipment moved, and trailers towed, noting any defects or deficiencies both verbally and in writing.
  13. Provides proper documentation of maintenance schedules and repairs.

A good deal of responsibility falls on the Shop Foreman to ensure the proper maintenance and availability of safe equipment for both the shop and the field. Here are some things Sugg is looking for in a good candidate:

    11. Prioritizes the safety of all individuals on the job site.
    12. Ability to troubleshoot issues in person and over the phone.
    13. Ability to read, interpret, and compose work order.
    14. Knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in construction work.
    15. Knowledge of heavy site construction equipment operation, maintenance, capability, use, and function.
    16. General knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
    17. Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely. 
    18. Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule, all while all leading others to do the same.
    19. Ability to work with computers as a tool for problem solving, diagnosis, and for retrieving and completing electronic work orders.
    20. Working knowledge of electrical and hydraulic systems.
    21. Ability to perform job requirements in adverse field and weather conditions.
    22. Treats all employees as part of the team.

Education and Experience

  1. Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work as described.
  2. Valid and appropriate in-state driver’s license (or the ability to obtain said license) is required. CDL is desired.
  3. Shop Foreman must possess a minimum of 5 years of experience with heavy construction equipment repair and maintenance.

Additional Requirements and Information

  1. Shop Foreman should possess the basic tools for the trade including but not limited to ¾” drive and under. A tool allowance is provided.
  2. Mechanic’s truck and company phone is provided. 
  3. Employee health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance is provided. 401K is also offered with a company match.
  4. Pay is the top of the market for this role. Sugg feels whatever is paid is an investment and money well spent for the right hire.
